The issue: Two senators
propose fast-tracking visas for immigrants willing to buy a home in the U.S. to help buoy housing market. Longtime observers of the American political scene knew that the immigration problem would begin to be solved when enough people found a way to benefit and even profit from the problem. New York … Continue Reading

By the end of the year, Davis could be selected as one of six cities that can save the world. Or at least to act as a model on just how to save it. David Gershon, former White House and United Nations adviser, has embarked on a tour to invite select cities to apply for … Continue Reading

The plan is simple: Bring 10 items or more to a local swap meet — high chairs, shoes, socks, shirts, skirts, pants, hats, family-friendly movies, toys, jumpers, etc. — and leave with as much as you need. Peace.Love.Swap — an organization that organizes events for parents to swap their gently used baby, kid, teen and … Continue Reading

October is a month of milestones for Greg and Ali Steele. It’s when they celebrate their birthdays, their wedding anniversary and, as of a year ago, the birth of a baby girl.
This year, it happened to be the month the West Sacramento couple jointly aided three seriously injured crash victims.
It was Saturday, Greg Steele’s 33rd birthday. The couple, former Davis residents, first enjoyed lunch at Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, where they had had their first date. Afterward, on a whim, they decided to take a motorcycle ride along the Sacramento River.

When I noted in this space last Sunday that our water rates will rise far more dramatically than the 14 percent annual increase the city has promised, several city officials wrote to say the 14 percent figure was only an estimate for the “average” user that presumed the higher rates would cause people to conserve … Continue Reading

This Delta Valley Conference football schedule is looking more and more like a walk through a dark barn with Michael Myers. Lopsided losses to bullies Franklin and Grant already have left welts on the psyche of Davis High’s undermanned-but-game Blue Devils. Both the Wildcats and Pacers are imposing — no question — but neither are … Continue Reading
