By Jerry Murphy It was the day after Christmas. As I was wheeled backward through the glaring hospital corridor, rows of overhead lights looming up behind me like little suns and then fading away to the front, I remember thinking that this day was just 45 years since the day of the five miracles. Dr. Kwame, left, and Bobby H. are bright-eyed and full of enthusiasm even at 6 a.m. Sundays, when they host a long-running gospel music show on KDVS radio, 90.3 FM. Jeff Hudson/Enterprise photo

How do you measure a volunteer’s personal dedication? There are many different ways. For volunteer gospel disc jockeys Bobby H and Dr. Kwame, the definition includes getting up before dawn on Sunday morning — every week — and coming to the basement studios of campus/community radio station KDVS on the UC Davis campus. There, they … Continue Reading

Dairy Christmas, and a happy moo year!

Dairy Barn resident Katie Helland visits with her favorite cow, Kaylee. "She was born during my freshman year at UC Davis. It’s a job that continues during winter break because, well … cows don’t recognize holidays.

Each day, the dairy barn residents take turns bottle-feeding calves at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

I grew up reading the stories of James Herriot, who wrote about working as a vet in the English countryside. I was convinced I was going to become the girl version of Herriot …
