Blue are victorious in local grid games

WOODLAND Ñ The Davis Junior Blue Devil Youth Tackle Football program went through its Week Four schedule with resolve as all four Blue teams captured victories on the road at Pioneer.

In running its season mark to a perfect 4-0, the Pee Wee Blue crafted a 20-0 shutout of the Patriots early on Saturday.

The Blue Devils started strong with a 62-yard run on the first snap to quarterback Payne Barksdale. BarksdaleÕs run gave the locals a quick six-point margin.

Lucas Griffith scored two touchdowns, one from 25 yards and one up the middle from 10 yards out. After one of the scores, Davis converted when Tanner McNamara made a nice catch in the back of the end zone for two.

Zane Schouten caught a few passes during the game to help move the football downfield. The offensive line did an outstanding job blocking with great blocks from Elijah Hackett, Kel Williams, Jeremiah Jones, Michael Catanzaro and Ulysses Wright.

The defense was strong as usual allowing only two first downs all day.

Great tackling by Lucas Griffiths, Peyton Early, Francisco Cortina, Elijah Hackett, Hudson Garland, Tsadiku Obolu and Demetrius Hyder created miscues resulting in fumble recoveries by Barksdale, Justin Qvistgaard and Schouten.

ÒItÕs good to be 4-0,Ó coach Craig Barksdale, addingÉ ÒWe have to keep improving in several areas because our competition is getting better also.Ó

Midgets continue to roll

Last week they domininated with an offense that rolled up over 300 yards on the ground.

This week the Junior Blue Devil Blue Midget team added a new wrinkle to their offensive juggernaut by picking up 131 yards with their passing game. Add that to 288 more rushing yards and the Davis Midget Blue squad hammered out a 54-7 decision over the Pioneer Patriots on Saturday.

ÒThe passing game has always been there, we just havenÕt needed it the way weÕve been running the ball,Ó head coach Adam Perez explained, ÒThe only way to develop a passing game is to pass. This gives us a more balanced attack that we will eventually need.Ó

It was pretty clear the Devils could have been one-dimensional, initially rolling to 291 yards on just 13 carries (22-yard average per carry).

Wally Aguirre had touchdown runs of 70, 20 and 58 yards. Josh Greenfield picked up 58 yards on just two carries and a trip to pay dirt, while quarterback Quinn Williams netted 42 yards on four lugs and a score. Justin Singh-Courtney ran in for a PAT conversion. Bailey Yarrow, Frankie Spinardi and Will Stevenson were the keys to the long gainers as their aggressive downfield blocking helped spring the ball carriers.

Four different receivers hooked up with Williams (7-of-12 afternoon with three scoring strikes).

Greenfield snagged three balls for 92 yards and a touchdown. Deven Sanchez ran a sweet little delay pattern to the corner of the end zone for a score and Quentin McCray snared a slant pass good for six points to round out the scoring. Ray Stevenson latched onto a pass as well as the Junior Blues spread the ball around.

Meanwhile, Logan James, Charles Bell, Nash Nunes and Francisco Cisneros were slanting into the Patriot backfield, causing havoc all game. The lone Pioneer score came late in the game on a long kickoff return.

ÒThe heart and soul of our team is epitomized by the play of guys like Capp Wiedenhoefer, Quinn Bunstock, and Ricky Pacciorini,Ó Perez said. ÒThese are first-year players who work their tails off and keep improving every week. Their play in the offensive line is what makes our offense go.Ó

The Junior Blue Devils travel to Folsom Vista this Saturday.

Junior Midgets go to 4-0

Continuing its winning streak, the Junior Midget Blue was impressive in a 30-0 victory over the Pioneer Patriots. The locals are now 4-0.

Quarterback Jack Beckman connected with Danny Medina in the first quarter for a 30-yard touchdown on a perfectly thrown ball over the middle. Beckman (4-of-10 passing) finished with 59 yards for the day.

Medina added to his offensive explosion with 70-yard TD run on a reverse. Deon Wilkins executed an incredible block on the touchdown play, according to coach Marty Morse, allowing Medina to score.

Later, Cole Morse added a 25-yard touchdown and Ish Perez scored his first touchdown of the season with a four-yard run through a giant hole created by the offensive line.

ÒIt was awesome to get the ball into so many hands during this game,Ó Morse continued. ÒJake Hammond, Medina, Perez, Devon Kim, Austin Griffith, John Lagattuga, Glenn Welch and Jack Hoal all provided offensive spark for our team today.

ÒThis was a well-rounded effort by the entire team.Ó

The defensive was led by Jake Hammond with five tackles. Tucker Fisk recorded four, including a sack with Kyle Morse for a loss of seven yards.

Ben Easton and Will Bodendorfer had breakout defensive efforts, making three tackles each.

ÒI am so proud of the efforts given by our entire team today. This squad continues to get better with every game,Ó Morse added. ÒThis team is beginning to see the results of their dedication (improving) with every practice. They are a very impressive unit.Ó

Mathew Scheiber, Liam Condon, Nathan Ortiz, Logan Johnson, Miles Lampley, Tommy Mctygue and Jake Griffith all made impressive tackles on defense.

ÒI am very pleased with the performance of our second units. These kids are playing aggressive defense and have shut out two out of our four opponents. We play a very good offensive team in Folsom Vista next week, an offense that will really challenge our improving defense.Ó

SaturdayÕs game in Folsom will be for exclusive first-place rights in Division II.

Pee Wees get clutch plays

The Davis Pee Wee Blues moved its league record to 2-0 with a 14-0 win against Pioneer.

The Junior Blue Devil offensive line Ñ Arcel Rusanganwa, Luke Scoggins, Kayden Hoal, Joseph Morrison, Chris Plasterer, Noah Murray, Gavin Schouten, Jakob Lee, Isaac Mendoza, Mitch Finklang, Vincent Dossa and Billy Easton Ñ blocked all day long for the running backs, who consistently gain critical yards up the middle.

For the opening score, Nathan Sanchez passed to Neil Welch (on a fourth-and-15), who took the ball to the 1-yard line. Jason Sanchez ran in for the touchdown.

The score was at 6-0 until the third quarter when Welch took the handoff for a 63-yard run touchdown gallop. Noah Murray booted a point after touchdown (two points) to increase the Blue Devil lead to 14-0.

Defensive highlights included an interception by Welch, and tackles by Landon Hurlock, Luke Maffly, Caden Neel, Ryan Benjamin, Mason Blackman and Morrison.

Special teams established excellent field position with thundering punts by Noah Murray.

ÒIt was exciting for players and fans to witness MurrayÕs punts, kickoffs, and especially the two-point PAT,Ó observed coach Chad Sanchez.

In the fourth quarter, Logan McNamara hit the hole hard, gaining five yards to run out the clock and end the game.

ÒOur players have made a lot of progress to allow the team to be 2-0 in league play, and we need to work hard this week to prepare for Folsom Vista (Saturday),Ó Sanchez added.
