Flatpicking guitarist and bluegrass entertainer David Grier will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday at the historic Schmeiser Barn, 35125 County Road 31 (four miles west of Lake Boulevard), Davis.
Grier is known to local audiences, having performed in Davis two years ago. This appearance, the third show in the 2010 Barnyard Acoustic Music Festival season, is co-sponsored by Barnyard Theatre and the UC Davis Friends of Acoustic Music.
Grier, a Nashville resident since age 3, grew up immersed in the bluegrass music world, and he began playing the guitar when he was 6. Today, he is regarded as a premier acoustic guitarist, along with early influences such as Doc Watson, Tony Rice and family friend Clarence White.
Grier was recognized by Acoustic Guitar Magazine in 2000 as one of the artists of the decade, and he has been named guitar player of the year three times by the International Bluegrass Music Association.
He has played on four Grammy Award-winning albums: ÒTrue Life Blues: A Tribute to Bill Monroe,Ó ÒThe Great Dobro Sessions,Ó Alison BrownÕs ÒFairweatherÓ and ÒAmazing Grace 2: A Country Salute to Gospel.Ó
After releasing four albums on Rounder Records, beginning with 1988Õs ÒFreewheeling,Ó Grier launched his own label Ñ Dreadnought Recordings Ñ with 1998Õs ÒHootenanny.Ó That album, also featuring Dirk Powell and Tim OÕBrien, has been called Òendlessly inventive and tastefulÓ by the WebÕs All Music Guide.
GrierÕs most recent release, 2009Õs ÒEvocative,Ó features 10 original tunes and a rich complement of collaborators, including Victor Wooten, Paul Franklin and Stuart Duncan.
