I read with interest your story on Assemblywoman Mariko YamadaÕs 2010 Food Stamp Challenge. I appreciate the fact that Yamada is willing to experience for herself what living on food stamps is like, at least for a week.
I also read Bob DunningÕs column opining about how a family of six might make its way on a food stamp budget. Dunning indicated that a family of six would have $746.70 to spend each month on food. Based on this figure, he proposed various means by which a family might satisfy its dietary needs.
Dunning made some assumptions about food stamp families that were not consistent with my experience as an occasional Loaves and Fishes volunteer and a regular contributor, but I assumed the numbers he used were accurate.
On TuesdayÕs Forum page, Yamada indicates the monthly benefit for a family of six is actually $537, or $209 less than the $746 figure Dunning used.
My question to The Enterprise is who is correct?
