Yuba Historical Society presents ÒA Walk Around Sutter ButtesÕ ÔHalf DomeÕ Ó on Sunday, Nov. 7. Participants will hike the Cat Rock Loop from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
On this moderately paced hike, participants will circumnavigate Cat Rock, a volcanic Òhalf domeÓ ascending 500 feet above Peace Valley, an interior basin on the Sutter ButtesÕ northern flank. The 5 1/2-hour walk begins with a trek through a lush Bay Laurel grove followed by a geology talk, then an ascends 300 feet to the shoulder of Cat Rock where hikers will enjoy a close-up view of the mountainÕs shear walls and a panorama of the northern Sacramento Valley.
The excursion ends with a visit to an ancient Indian encampment. Hikers will be treated to early fall color display and perhaps a glimpse of bald eagles who make Peace Valley their winter home.
This outing is lead by Daniel Barth, a lifelong resident of the Sutter Buttes area. He will talk about the unique plant and animal community of the Sutter Buttes, the mountainÕs well-preserved history and its geology, as well as the Maidu and Wintun Indians who considered the Buttes a supreme sacred site.
Cost is $15 for Yuba Historical Society members and $25 for nonmembers; there are discounts for children. Membership price begins at $15.
