Special to The Enterprise
The Greater 2nd Baptist ChurchÕs Usher Board members, in collaboration with other community organizations, recently came together and presented an afternoon meal for some of WoodlandÕs less fortunate residents.
More than 70 people were served a lunch of spaghetti, bread, vegetables, corn on the cob, watermelon and pastries.
ÒThis meal was truly a community effort,Ó says spokesman Jack Jackson.
The Yolo County African American Association, a local nonprofit organization, obtained vegetables and pastries from the Food Bank of Yolo County. The food was taken to the 2nd Baptist Church where the churchÕs Usher Board members prepared the spaghetti with meat sauce. Vegetables were washed and some cooked, and the pastries were sliced.
Roy Postell, CEO of local nonprofit Homeward Bound Outreach, said he has been sponsoring potluck meals for Yolo CountyÕs less fortunate residents for several years. He said he once faced Òhard timesÓ and was given help. Now, heÕs trying to help others in similar situations.
ÒI think this is a very worthwhile program, as you can see from the number of people who are here for the potluck,Ó Postell said. ÒI hope to move the program into the Greater 2nd Baptist Church when the weather gets inclement Ñ rainy, cold, windy, etc.
ÒAfter all, the churchÕs Usher Board members have been contributing for a long time to make the potluck program a success.Ó
Usher Board members who participated in serving the afternoon potluck meal included Glennie Jackson, Thelma Blakes, Lillian Hugeley and JoAnn Harris.
