The public is welcome at a free open house at the California Raptor Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Presentations are planned at 10 a.m. and noon, and all are welcome to join the Hawk Walk, which starts at the centerÕs gate at 8 a.m. and finished at 9 a.m. Participants should bring binoculars.
Raptor Center staff and volunteers care for injured raptors Ñ eagles, hawks, vultures and owls Ñ rehabilitating and releasing them back to the wild whenever possible. Birds that cannot be released are trained to take part in the centerÕs education program.
ÒThe open house is designed to show people what we do,Ó a Raptor Center spokesman says. ÒThe special presentations will demonstrate fascinating features of raptor biology and ecology, and visitors will be able to see many non-releasable raptors housed in display cages as well as birds out on the glove.Ó
The onsite museum also will be open.
To reach the center, take the UC Davis exit from Interstate 80. Turn south on Old Davis Road away from the main campus. Cross the railroad tracks and keep going to the Putah Creek Bridge. Look for the California Raptor Center sign with a diagonal arrow pointing to the left. Do not cross the bridge. Instead, turn left onto the paved levee road and follow it for one block until it dips down off the levee, then turn right into the parking lot. Parking is free. The open house and educational programs are free, but donations will be accepted with gratitude.
