Katie Beam, a Woodland clinical nurse specialist, has received the 2010 NurseWeek Excellence Award in the teaching category.
Beam was recognized for her significant contributions in education, when she worked at Methodist Hospital, operated by Catholic Healthcare West in Sacramento.
Beam was the only educator for more than 400 registered nurses and almost 1,200 total staff members at Methodist Hospital. She was responsible for overseeing the annual competency education and for developing and delivering educational materials to the staff in all areas of the hospital. This education ranged from a one hour continuing education class to the physician residents on insulin management to supporting the entire educational plan for a new clinical program such as the bariatric surgery program.
Beam joined Woodland Healthcare, also operated by CHW, in April. As a clinical nurse specialist, Beam is focused on improving care to patients by translating research into practice, evaluating evidence, applying research in decision-making and implementing viable clinical innovations to change practice.
