The fourth annual Davis Jazz and Beat Festival will take place Friday and Saturday at the John Natsoulas Center for the Arts, 521 First St., Davis.
The event will be filled with poetry readings and painting improvisation set to the rhythm of live jazz.
The Natsoulas GalleryÕs concurrent exhibition of Beat art will include paintings by some of the eraÕs most intriguing artists. On Friday, film screenings will showcase works by Stan Brakage, Jess Collins and Bruce Connor. A panel discussion will feature poet David Meltzer and filmmaker Craig Baldwin.
SaturdayÕs Jazz Festival, a fundraiser for the Davis High School Jazz Band, will feature entertainment on three stages.

Rare stamps fuel comedic stage show
The Capital Stage production of Theresa RebeckÕs ÒMauritiusÓ previews Friday through Thursday, Oct. 14; opens Oct. 15 and continues through Nov. 7 at Old SacramentoÕs Delta King Theater.
Curtain times are 7 p.m. Wednesdays, 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 7 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays.
The dark comedy focuses on two estranged half-sisters who inherit a book of extremely rare stamps.

Local teacher shows her artworks
An exhibit of paintings by Marta Juliao-Puente will be displayed during a reception taking place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Beyond the Garden Gate, 1015 Olive Drive, Davis.
Juliao-PuenteÕs medium is acrylics on pre-stretched canvas, and the vivid colors of her artwork express a state of joy, peace and gratefulness.

Workshop promises a ÔCoolÕ set of songs
Musician Laura Sandage will offer a creative gathering titled ÒService through SongÓ from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in the Unitarian Universalist Church library, 27074 Patwin Road, Davis.
The workshop, presented in tandem with the Cool Davis Climate Action projects, will include chants, odes, work songs, love songs, parodies, raps and rhymes.

Covell Gardens hosts solo pianist
Pianist Binns Melander will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Atria Covell Gardens, 1111 Alvarado Ave., Davis.
While a member of the U.S. Marine Band, Melander performed at the White House for President Johnson, and occasionally for Presidents Nixon and Ford. Melander also performed at both of President JohnsonÕs daughterÕs weddings.
SaturdayÕs recital will include a selection of classical pieces, original compositions and improvisational jazz.
