BRIEFS: Social justice lawsÕ status to be eyed

Jim Lindburg, a lobbyist for the Friends Committee on Legislation, will speak about the status of social justice legislation in California at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Davis Friends Meeting House, 345 L St.

The Friends Committee on Legislation is a nonprofit Òlobby of conscienceÓ established by Quakers in 1952 that works to bring more compassion and social justice into government by influencing law-making in the state Capitol.

ChildrenÕs author to read from new book

ChildrenÕs book author Annie J. King will present her new book, ÒGranny Annie Lives at the Airport,Ó at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at The Avid Reader, 617 Second St. in downtown Davis.

King, a West Sacramento resident, is a professor in the UC Davis department of animal science. She has a bachelorÕs degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and a masterÕs degree and Ph.D. from North Carolina State University.

Daleiden will chat with folks over coffee

Local residents can start their Saturday with Davis Board of Education member Gina Daleiden, at 9 a.m. at PeetÕs Coffee & Tea in The Marketplace, 1411 W. Covell Blvd. Daleiden is running for re-election on Nov. 2.

Support displaced women on Saturday

A benefit dinner for the Displaced Women in Choco, Colombia, runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davis Community Church, 412 C St., Davis.

Guests should arrive on time in order to enjoy an empanada and cup of Colombian coffee, which will be served during the first half-hour.

Tickets are available at the Davis Farmers Market on Saturday morning, by calling (530) 756-2718 and at the door later that day.

Zapato Viejo will perform Cuban music for dancing.

United Nations party planned at I-House

The public is invited to a celebration of the 65th anniversary of the United Nations from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at International House, 10 College Park. The event is hosted by the Davis chapter of the United Nations Association.

A panel of seven experts will present a progress report on the U.N.Õs millennium development goals and discuss the challenges that remain to achieving a significant reduction in extreme poverty and hunger around the world by 2015.
