Firefighters from throughout Yolo County battled a third-alarm structure fire in Woodland on Tuesday night, just a few feet away from where another blaze destroyed six apartment units earlier in the week.

Interim Fire Chief Rick Sander said crews were dispatched at 9:50 p.m. to 817 Fifth St., where they arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the second-floor attic area. Firefighters ventilated the attic to remove smoke and heat.

“They found fire in the wall and moved to the first floor, where they found the seat of the fire in a first-floor bathroom,” Sander said in a news release.
\n
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported, and information about displaced residents was not immediately available this morning.

Construction of the building, which featured tongue-and-groove wall paneling, prompted the Woodland agency to call in additional resources to fight the blaze. Additional crews from the Davis, UC Davis, West Sacramento, Dixon, Yolo and Yocha DeHe fire departments responded to assist.

The fire occurred just across the street from the scene of a Sunday morning fire that gutted or heavily damaged six apartments and displaced 14 residents. That incident, at 814 Fifth St., remains under investigation, though residents have said they believe a wall heater to be at fault.
