LETTERS: 88 jobs still on the chopping block

Davis

The Davis Schools Foundation is pleased that early retirements will allow the Davis Joint Unified School District to rescind 48 pink slips (ÒRetirement means 48 fewer layoffs,Ó April 26).

WeÕd like to clarify, though, that while the 48 teachers holding those layoff notices will have jobs next year, the fact remains that 88 positions are still on the chopping block. The retirements simply allow 48 teachers with less seniority to fill the remaining positions.

Our children will still have much larger classes and fewer counselors Ñ precisely what our foundation is raising money to avert. Please donÕt think that because nearly 50 layoff notices are being rescinded, we no longer need raise money. The need is as great as ever.

In fact, we plan to continue our Dollar-a-Day campaign with increased vigor, fueled by the community support demonstrated by our highly successful Schoolapalooza last weekend. If you havenÕt yet given, please consider doing so now. Visit http://www.davisschoolsfoundation.org to learn how.

Our momentum is strong. Our deadline is approaching. Together, we can preserve excellence in our schools.
