Melvin Richard Basinger, a lifelong resident of Davis, died Dec. 27, 2010. Born to Everett and Euleta Basinger on Oct. 12, 1932, he was 78 years old.

After graduation from Davis High School in 1950, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. He married Claudine Seals in 1953 and the couple were married 52 years until her death on Oct. 26, 2005.

Melvin owned and operated Mel\’s Flying “A” gas station on the corner of First and B streets during the late 1950s. He later worked as an automobile mechanic for Ray\’s Automotive. In the mid-1960s he went to work for his brother at the Davis Nursery and remained there until his retirement in 1994.

Mel and his wife enjoyed many happy hours fishing in the Delta and on the Sacramento River. He was a member of the Dixon Boat Club. He spent many hours each November preparing for the Christmas season by decorating the outside of his home with miles of lights and inflatable decorations. He loved to bring holiday joy to others. Mel loved his family and friends. In addition to his immediate family — his son Richard W. Basinger and granddaughters Krystle and Amber — his extended family and friends will forever miss him.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Wiscombe Funeral Home, 116 D St. in Davis.
