A bid is out to develop a new water well system at the Davis Migrant Center in Yolo County, Yolo County Housing announced Wednesday. The project will provide the Davis Migrant Center residents with a new and improved source of domestic water, according to a news release.

Yolo County Housing and the state Department of Housing and Community Development\’s Office of Migrant Services were awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture\’s Rural Development Program.

The grant to complete the new water system project includes a new water well and pump, hydro-pneumatic tank and emergency back-up power supply.

Also included in this project is a new site irrigation system that will use the latest in water-saving technology.

The improvements to the Davis Migrant Center are ongoing, since the original center was demolished and replaced with modernized housing units in 2004.

“We appreciate the help we have received from both the Office of Migrant Services and USDA Rural Development for this project,” Lisa Baker, executive director of Yolo County Housing, said in a news release. “This will complete the makeover of the Davis Migrant Center and allow us to better serve our seasonal farmworker families for many years to come.”

Yolo County Housing has been in operation for more than 60 years. The organization has partnered with the state\’s Office of Migrant Services to run three migrant centers in Yolo and Solano counties.
