UC Davis student Kevin Wu and his dad, Michael, are still going strong, finishing third in the around-the-world game show, ÒThe Amazing Race,Ó on Sunday night.
The father-son duo is among seven remaining teams that traveled from Norway to St. Petersburg, Russia, to complete the latest Ñ and possibly smelliest Ñ leg of the race.
First, teams had to choose between a challenge involving classic cinema or classical music.
Kevin, aka YouTube star KevJumba, opted for the cinema task. His particular knowledge of filmmaking, however, did not give his team the edge he expected.
Teams had to sort through piles of tangled film strips to find scenes that matched the movie playing on a large screen in the room.
ÒWhen we got the film studio, there was this black-and-white film playing and a thousand little film strips, and IÕve never studied that kind of film,Ó Kevin said.
Kevin and Michael, who were the first to arrive at the studio, slipped a couple of places as other teams found the matching film before they did.
They rushed to get back ahead in the next challenge, where Kevin donned a long floral dress and head scarf.
ÒHello, beautiful ladies. I have your poop and your potatoes,Ó Kevin said, greeting the similarly dressed ÒbabushkasÓ Ñ Russian for ÒgrandmothersÓ Ñ who were waiting for him in a large field.
They showed him how to plant 50 potatoes, each with a mound of manure for fertilizer.
KevinÕs quick work brought the Wus back in first place, but only momentarily Ñ they had trouble finding the check-in location at the end of the leg and finished third.
Jill and Thomas, a young couple from Marina Del Rey, finished first. Another young couple, Nick and Vicki, from Nevada, finished last, but will stay in the race. It was a non-elimination leg.
The teams are competing for a $1 million prize at the finish line.
ÒThe Amazing RaceÓ airs at 7 p.m. Sundays on KOVR Channel 13. Past episodes can be seen at http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race.
