Caution urged as bats begin migrating

March is the beginning of bat migration season, and Yolo County Animal Services officials remind local residents to exercise caution. Each year, Yolo County has cases of rabies-positive bats, and Animal Services is warning residents against handling any bats they encounter, dead or alive, and to contact their office for assistance.

Pet owners also should make sure their pets are vaccinated against rabies. Cats and dogs often find the bats and the encounter can be deadly if the pet contracts rabies. Should bat colonies around inhabited buildings become a nuisance, they should only be handled by experienced relocation experts. The Northern California Bats website, www.norcalbats.org, can be used as an educational resource.

Concerns or bat encounters can be reported to the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, Animal Services Section, 24 hours a day at (530) 668-5287 or animal.bite@yolocounty.org.
