Acme Theatre Company will open its production of “Shane of Third Street” by Briandaniel Oglesby and “The Secret in the Wings” by Mary Zimmerman on Friday.

The plays will be presented at 7 p.m. Aug. 5-6 and 12-14 and at 2 p.m. Aug. 7 and 13. All performances will be at the Veterans’ Memorial Theater, 203 E. 14th St.

Directed by Ryan Lagerstrom, “Shane of Third Street,” takes the audience on an adventure as the young, gallant Shane dreams of competing in the Bakersfield Renaissance Pleasure Faire tournament when Otis, a local bully, interrupts his training.

Directed by Emily Henderson and Maddy Ryen, “The Secret in the Wings,” follows a young girl, Heidi, who knows that her next-door neighbor, Mr. Fitzpatrick, is an ogre with a tail — and a tale to tell.

Audience advisory: This production contains mature themes and adult language. It is intended for ages 13 and older.

Tickets are available at the Veterans’ Memorial Theater box office 45 minutes before curtain time. Prices are $12 general, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students. The 2 p.m. matinée Saturday, Aug. 13, is a pay-what-you-can performance.
