Ballet Hispanico arrives with ‘Sortijas’ and ‘Mad’Moiselle’
Ballet Hispanico — an ensemble founded in New York in 1970 — will visit the Mondavi Center on Friday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. with a program featuring two works.
“Sortijas” (“Rings”) is a duet, choreographed by Cayetano Soto and premiered by the company in April 2013, that celebrates Latino tradition by representing the circular ties of family and friends that link communities together over generations. “Mad’Moiselle” is a 2010 piece by choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa that explores iconic male/female images and gender identity in Latin American cultures.
The company describes itself as “the foremost dance representative of Hispanic culture in the United States.” Over the past 40-some years, Ballet Hispanico has performed for more than 2 million people in the United States, Europe and South America, and has a repertoire of more than 75 works.
The performance at Mondavi will be followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by Associate Professor Jon D. Rossini, chairman of the department of theater and dance at UC Davis. Tickets start at $49 general, $24.50 for students, available at www.mondaviarts.org or 530-754-2787.
