Harmonica player and bandleader Mark Hummel returns to the Palms Playhouse in Winters at 8:30 p.m. Friday with this year’s version of his “Harmonica Blues Blowout” featuring three other great blues harmonica players — Magic Dick, Lazy Lester and Andy Santana — as well as an appearance by guitarist Little Charlie Baty.
Magic Dick is the original harp man from the J. Geils Band, whose many hits flooded the airwaves during the 1970s and 1980s with chart-toppers like “FreezeFrame,” “Centerfold,” “First I Look At The Purse,” “Must a Got Lost” and “Give It To Me.”
Lazy Lester, from southern Louisiana, has been playing the blues since the mid-1950s and has records on the legendary Excello blues label. He played as a harpist on many classic blues albums, including Slim Harpo’s. Called “Lazy” because of his laid-back vocal style, he is widely known for his songs that were later covered by a wide range of rock, country, blues and even Tex-Mex stars. Among them are “I’m a Lover Not a Fighter,” “I Hear You Knockin’ ” and “Sugar Coated Love.”
Veteran West Coast musician Santana is a smooth, dynamic vocalist and harmonica player with a sophisticated urban style. With 30 years of professional experience, he is also an accomplished songwriter/guitarist with an unusual gift for lyrics, and is proficient at creating powerful melodies.
Baty is widely recognized as one of blues’ most versatile guitarists; he was the guitarist for Little Charlie & the Nightcats.
