Cellists perform at Sacramento church

By June 6, 2011

Local cellist Priscilla Hawkins will present a free recital at noon Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N St., on the Capitol Mall.

The first half of the program will feature Hawkins with pianist Olga Simons, performing music composed by Remo Giazotto (based on a theme by Albinoni), the “Vocalise” by Sergei Rachmaninoff (transcribed for cello and piano), and “El Gato Triste” by Chuck Mangione (transcribed for cello and piano).

The second half of the program will feature Hawkins with fellow cellist Patricia Valentine, performing Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango/Fuga,” Paul Desmond’s “Take Five” (a signature tune with Dave Brubeck’s band, of which Desmond was a member for many years), “Nostalgia in Times Square” by jazz great Charles Mingus, and others.

Hawkins is a longtime cello teacher in Davis, and has performed with several local and regional ensembles in recent years. Hawkins and Valentine formed the duo Tango Twosome three years ago.

Valentine has played with the Camellia Symphony in Sacramento for a number of years. Simons has taught piano in Davis since 1994.
