The Davis Art Center’s fourth annual Classical Guitar Series continues with a performance by world/jazz/chamber ensemble Quarteto Nuevo at 8 p.m. Friday, March 15.
The Los Angeles-based ensemble has an unusual style that is the product of the musical diversity of its members, who are deeply rooted in the worlds of North and South Indian, classical, Mexican indigenous, folkloric and jazz music.
Quarteto Nuevo started 2001 when percussionist Christopher Garcia invited a variety of musicians with different backgrounds to rehearse and improvise around their own and others’ music.
“I have always loved the sounds of these instruments — classical guitar, cello, woodwinds, and percussion — together, but had never had the opportunity to work in that sonic environment,” Garcia said.
The current group — which includes Garcia, cellist Jacob Szekely, acoustic guitarist Kenton Youngstrom and soprano sax player Damon Zick — has been performing together since 2008.
