By From page A11 | April 23, 2013

Local residents are invited to join musician Catherine Mandela at 2 p.m. Sunday at International House, 10 College Park in Davis. Mandela plays many international and unusual musical instruments in a storytelling program called “Instruments of the World.”

The program will begin at 2 p.m. in the I-House Community Room. The event is free to members; others are asked to donate $2 per child or $5 per family.

Mandela lived for a time in Italy when she played in a reggae band and also performed with Middle Eastern musicians. After returning to California, she played tenor sax for the Star Duster’s Orchestra swing band and saxophone, flute and percussion for the Orchestra Variedad Salsa-Merengue band in the Bay Area.

She created Sambandha — Music of the World — and performs and teaches music, and works for the state of California as an environmental scientist.
