Couple’s divergent art styles exhibited at Gallery 625

The works of the fine art artist and the cartoonist come together for the August exhibition at Gallery 625 in Woodland, which will feature the work of David and Terry Hollowell.

The husband and wife came to their art form through different paths: David through his university studies at Ithaca College (bachelor of fine arts) and Yale University (master of fine arts), and 27-year teaching career at UC Davis; Terry through a rich lifetime of experiences including work on an assembly line tying tobacco leaves, as a telephone lineman, mail censor for the Missouri State Penetentiary, Paris nanny, high school art teacher and cartoonist, including four years creating a weekly political cartoon for The Daily Democrat in Woodland.

“Most of the artists we know are not married to artists,” the couple say in a joint statement. “It’s easier that way — no overlapping egos. Fortunately, our fields are about as far apart as two creative people can get.

“Dave — a fine artist who takes, sometimes, years to finish an oil painting. Terry — a cartoonist who whips a drawing out in hours or days.”

The couple will be the guests of honor at the exhibition’s opening reception from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, coinciding with Woodland’s downtown First Friday Art Walk.

Gallery 625 is in the County Administration Building, 625 Court St. in Woodland. Regular gallery viewing hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
