The Davis Community Chorale will give two performances of its fall program — at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 — at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. The concert will feature singing as well as music for piano four hands.

Music director Alison Skinner said she has been recruiting, and membership in the Chorale has swelled to “almost 60 singers. It is very fun for me, and it is also fun for the longtime members to meet our new singers. It’s brought new energy to our ensemble.”

On the program will be a set of “Neue Liebeslieder Waltzer” Op. 65, by Johannes Brahms. Written in the early 1870s, this set of songs about love is “wonderfully fun to sing,” according to Skinner.

“And amazingly, even though there are 15 of them, they’re very diverse, despite all of them being in three-four time — except the last one, which is in nine-four. But not very many of them are about ‘plain happy love.’ Some of them are about the tension before love, the angst during love or the heartache after you’ve been left behind.”

Pianists Ellen Deffner and Molly Pretik will join the Chorale for this performance.

The program also will feature a set of American tunes — including hymns and folk songs — most of which were adapted by Aaron Copland and then arranged for chorus by other composers. These include “At The River,” “Long Time Ago,” “Ching A Ring” and “I Bought Me A Cat,” as well as “The Promise of Living” from Copland’s opera “The Tender Land.”

Rounding out the set will be “We’ll Shout,” an old American hymn from the 1870s — about the same time as the Brahms piece was written — arranged by Mack Wilberg.

A donation of $10 to $20 is requested at the door.

The Davis Community Chorale is also planning a Dec. 11 concert at 4 p.m., which will include the Davis Children’s Chorale, directed by Rachel Kessler. For the December concert, they will be doing excerpts from “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” by composer Gian Carlo Menotti.
