When it comes to performing arts, there is something for everyone at Davis High School.
DHS features three orchestral symphonies: Chamber Orchestra, Baroque Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra; three bands: Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band; four choirs: Advanced Treble Choir, Madrigal Singers, Concert Choir and Jazz choir; and a drama club.
This school year, between the Chamber Orchestra, Baroque Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra there will be 13 concerts. The Baroque Ensemble will play at noon Thursday, Dec. 5, in the state Capitol rotunda in Sacramento. The Symphony Orchestra will perform from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Mondavi Kids Outreach Concert as well as from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Dec. 9, in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center.
The Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and the Baroque Ensemble will all play at the DHS Orchestra Program Winter Concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in the Instructional Performing Arts Building.
The Baroque Ensemble will play at the Mondavi Center from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, which will be followed by the American Bach Soloists’ “Messiah” performance from 4 to 6 p.m. The Baroque Ensemble will play “Messiah” concerts at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20 and 21, at St. James Catholic Church, 1275 B St.
The DHS Concerto Competition will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the Brunelle Performance Hall at DHS. This concert is free and open to the public.
The Symphony Orchestra will perform kids outreach concerts at noon Feb. 13-14, and at 1 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Brunelle Performance Hall, and the Baroque Ballet Performance will begin at 8 p.m. on Feb. 14-15 at the same location.
The orchestras combined will perform at 2:30 p.m. March 15 at the annual Wennberg Concert in the Mondavi Center.
The UC Davis Baroque Ensemble and the DHS Baroque Ensemble will play at 3 p.m. April 27 in Brunelle Performance Hall, and play together again at noon on May 1 in the Mondavi Center. The Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Baroque Ensemble will perform together at 7 p.m. on March 22 for the DHS Finale Concert in the Brunelle Hall. The Baroque Ensemble also will travel to Italy from June 23 to July 2, where they will perform several concerts throughout the country.
The Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band will perform in 16 events during the school year, beginning with the all-day Delta Jazz Festival on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Delta College in Stockton.
The Jazz Bands and Jazz Choir will play from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Winter Jazz Extravaganza in Brunelle Hall. The Winter Rhapsody Concert will feature the Concert Band and Symphonic Band performing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at the same venue. The bands together will hold their all-night playathon Jan. 17-18 to raise money for the music program. The Folsom Jazz Festival will take place Jan. 25 in Folsom, times to be announced.
The Festivity of Bands on Feb. 19 will be held on either the DHS or UCD campus, times to be announced.
The Coconut Grove fundraising concert at Emerson Junior High, which runs from 3 to 10:30 p.m. on March 8, will include performances by all the DHS bands, various food options and a silent auction. The Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival continues from morning to night March 28-30 in Monterey.
The Concert Band Festival, which will feature performances by all DHS bands, will take place April 11 at the Brunelle Performance Hall. The fun moves outdoors the next day, when the bands will join in the Picnic Day Parade on April 12.
The Senior Concert and band awards event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 6 at the Brunelle Hall. The Festival of the Arts with DHS Combined Concert and Symphonic Bands will play all day May 10 in Central Park. The spring tour to Seattle and Victoria, British Columbia, will be May 15-19, times to be announced. The Jazz Band will perform at the Jazz on a Summer’s Eve concert from 6 to 10 p.m. on May 30 at the Brunelle Hall.
The Symphonic and Jazz bands will close the year with the Commencement Concert Brown Stadium at DHS on June 13, times to be announced.
The Jazz Choir will perform in the eight events throughout the school year. The Harmony in Our Lives Concert is planned for Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Brunelle Performance Hall. The Jazz Choir also will perform in the Davis tree-lighting ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 5, on the E Street Plaza in downtown Davis.
The fundraising Cabaret Dinner is planned for Feb. 9-10 at Emerson Junior High and the songs will be repeated at the Cabaret Concert Feb. 14 in the Brunelle Hall. A District Choral Concert is slated for March 18 and then the choir heads to Chicago, where it will participate in the Fame Show Choir Competition March 21-15.
The year closes with the Jazz-N-Pops concert June 7 in the Brunelle Hall.
The Advanced Treble Choir will hold nine concerts over the course of the year, including a performance at the choir’s wine-tasting fundraiser from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Pence Gallery, 212 D St. The Harmony in Our Lives Concert will be in the Brunelle Hall on Nov. 17, times to be announced.
ATC will perform a “Messiah” concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 20 at St. James, then will host the Davis High Idol preliminaries at 7 p.m. on Jan. 24 and 25 at the Brunelle Hall. The Davis High Idol finals will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 at the same venue. ATC will perform in the All-District Concert on Feb. 18 in the Brunelle Hall, times to be announced, and will close the year with the Pops Concert on May 29.
The drama department will present four shows this school year. “Pippin” will be performed at 7 p.m. Nov. 8-9, 14-16 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Brunelle Performance Hall. The spring show, which has not yet been selected, is planned for March 7-9, 13-14 and 16. The annual “Tribute to Tony Fields” will be presented at 7 p.m. April 25 and 26.
The drama department closes out the year with “Out on a Limb” on May 9 and 10.
