The real world and the film noir “reel” world collide in “City of Angels” at the Davis Musical Theatre Company, Sept. 14 through Oct. 7.
The six-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy weaves together two storylines and contemporary jazz idiom.
“City of Angels” is a stylish comedy from the glamorous days of Hollywood and a 1940s pinpoint-accurate detective drama rolled in one. Its dual personality is reflected in its presentation.
At DMTC, under the direction of John Ewing, the show’s two storylines are presented in a visually stunning way — one in color, about an author struggling to get his book turned into a screenplay, and the second, produced in black and white, as a fictional film.
The musical chronicles the life of Stine, a young novelist, attempting to get his screenplay written. As Stine writes his private-eye story in colorful 1940s style similes, his written word is recreated on stage in the film noir style of the era.
Performances for the Sept. 14 to Oct. 7 run are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:15 p.m. and Sundays at 2:15 p.m., at the DMTC Performing Arts Center, 607 Peña Drive, Davis.
