Get ready to shake it up — the Earthquake Street Festival takes place from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, on Main Street in downtown Winters.
The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a ballet folklorico and roping performance by festival favorites Los Charros Los Caporales, who will bring as their special guests Marìachì Oro De Mexìco.

Next up at 6 p.m. will be local band Egg, featuring Joseph Sanders, Carlos Figueroa, Nick Hawley, Chris Patton and Brett Hendrickson, all former Winters High students, playing progressive rock music.
At 6:30 p.m., the festival will really get rattled when the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh hits Main Street.
Bonanza King, which debuted last year especially for the Earthquake Street Festival, has blossomed into a year-round band. Bonanza King spent the past year polishing its act and performing at a variety of venues, and has become a regional Western swing and honky-tonk favorite.

The band includes local musicians Kari King, Richard Hemenway, Keith Cary, Steve O’Neil, Roger Kunkle, Bruce Brewer and Cedar Seegar.
At 7:30 p.m., the first-ever Earthquake Karaoke Kontest takes place, with six contestants vying for the title of Karaoke King or Queen. The winner will be chosen by the audience — the contestant with the most applause wins.
From 8 to 11 p.m., the Time Bandits will take over the main stage, and the street dance will carry the rest of the event. During the entire evening, food and beverage booths will line Main Street.
On East Main Street, fun and festivities are planned for children all evening. The Winters Combined PTA returns this year with a slate of attractions and activities. There also will be vendor booths, snacks and bounce houses.
The Earthquake Street Festival is sponsored by the Winters Chamber of Commerce, and is free of charge. The event is a major fundraiser for the Chamber.
The Earthquake Street Festival got its start in April 1992 as a centennial celebration of the rebuilding of the downtown following a devastating earthquake in April 1892. Winters residents John Pickerel, owner of The Buckhorn, and Charley Wallace, publisher of the Winters Express, founded the festival, which was later taken over by the Chamber of Commerce and moved to August so it wouldn’t compete for funds and volunteers with Youth Day.
