The Davis High Jazz Choir will swing into action with interpretations of the great American songbook at its 25th annual Jazz Choir Cabaret on Feb. 9-10.

The event takes place at the Emerson Junior High School Indoor Commons, 2121 Calaveras Ave. Seating times are 6 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. Reserve tickets by Feb. 1.

In this year’s Cabaret, the Jazz Choir will perform songs from the swing era, focusing on music by the composer Harold Arlen. Songs include “Over the Rainbow,” “Paper Moon” and “I’ve Got the World on a String.” The theme is “Get Happy,” also an Arlen tune, with which the choir will close the program. The DHS Jazz Band Combo will accompany the choir.

As always, the choir will open with its traditional rendition of “Cabaret” from the musical of the same name by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Jazz Choir students also are preparing solos and ensembles of their own choosing. When the high school students are not on stage, they become waiters and waitresses for the dinner catered by Cracchiolo’s Market in Woodland.

Bill Zinn, the Jazz Choir director, explained that he chose the music for both its educational and entertainment values.

“We aim to present a varied program that takes our audiences on a musical journey through the course of the evening,” he said. “Each song has its own character and, put together, each ‘character’ adds to the whole of the story being told.”

Margaret Starbuck, a senior, is performing for the second year in a row.

“Cabaret was one of my favorite events last year,” she said. “I came offstage beaming.”

The Jazz Choir has been preparing for Cabaret throughout the school year. The event will help fund the choir’s trip to Southern California in March.

The evening also will feature a silent auction of themed baskets donated by Jazz Choir parents and local businesses.

For those who can’t make the dinner shows, there is a special Cabaret concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Brunelle Performance Hall at DHS, 315 W. 14th St. Concert tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 
for students and seniors.
