Indian music featured on March 8 in Vanderhoef Studio Theatre

Rita Sahai, who leads the Hindustani Vocal Ensemble for the UC Davis music department, and is also on the faculty of the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in Marin County, will lead a special program titled “Innovation Greets Tradition” on Saturday, March 8, at 7 p.m. in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center.

Sahai (harmonium and vocals) will be joined by Nikhil Pandya (tabla), Kanwaljit Kalsi (harmonium), Rahcel Unterseher (violin) and Vikram Shrowty (slide guitar).

Born in India, Sahai is an acclaimed composer and performer who tours throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India. She has recorded vocals for the Grammy Award-winning bluegrass artist Béla Fleck. She also has produced several recordings herself, one of which is a film of her recent project Vasundhara — an ode to Mother Earth.
