This film follows the joyful Maire O’Donnell (Connie Nielsen) as she adopts young Tomas (John Bell) from an orphanage and brings him to her home on Corrie Island, off the west coast of Ireland. Her husband Alec (Aidan Quinn) doesn’t take to the timid boy and Tomas wonders why Alec is so reluctant to get to know him.
Maire teaches him the local lore about seals, to enjoy the outdoors and confidence to deal with difficult situations. He takes care of a stranded seal pup and makes friends with Seamus (Jack Gleeson) and Nancy (Tara Scully).
