“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” a 2011 multinational film directed by John Madden, will be screened Friday as part of the International House Film Series.

The series is co-sponsored by the United Nations Association of Davis and International House. Doors at I-House, 10 College Park, open at 7:30 p.m. and the film begins promptly at 8 p.m.

There is no charge, but donations are accepted with gratitude to help cover the cost of DVD rental, facilities use and refreshments.

The film follows seven “financially distressed” British retirees who travel to India to enjoy retirement where they can afford it. Lured by the extravagant brochure of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel — for the elderly and beautiful — in Jaipur, they find circumstances in reality less than luxurious.

The seven — portrayed by Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Tom Wilkinson, Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup — each have a different way of dealing with the mysteries of life in India as well as with the ever-optimistic hotel manager Sonny, played by Dev Patel. All make surprising discoveries about themselves, each other and life in a totally new environment.
