Since forming 30 years ago, the Virginia-based quintet Lonesome River Band has been one of the most popular and influential acts in bluegrass. Lonesome River Band will make its debut at The Palms Playhouse in Winters at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $20.

Since its 1991 breakout CD “Carrying The Tradition,” Lonesome River Band has been one the bluegrass world’s top festival headliners and a concert-circuit marquis band. Leading the band is longtime member Sammy Shelor, a Virginia Country Music Hall of Famer and multi-award-winning banjo picker. He is joined by Brandon Rickman (guitar), Mike Hartgrove (fiddle), Barry Reed (bass) and Randy Jones (mandolin).

Rooted in the bluegrass traditions of such iconic musicians as Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley and Flatt and Scruggs, LRB combines traditional bluegrass’ driving rhythm and tight vocal arrangements with dynamic improvisations in ways that make centuries-old tunes fresh and bring a stamp of authenticity to their original songs, a news release said.

Tickets for Lonesome River Band’s show at The Palms , 13 Main St. in Winters, are available at Armadillo Music in Davis, Watermelon Music in Woodland, Pacific Ace Hardware in Winters and at the door if not sold out. For more information, call 530-795-1825 or visit palmsplayhouse.com and lonesomeriverband.com.
