So you think you can dance? This week, the Australian dance company known as Lucy Guerin Inc. will offer a piece titled “Untrained” — a quirky and irreverent theatrical exploration that takes its performers and its audience into a new and undefined experience.
Four men take to the stage. Two of these men are highly skilled, experienced dancers; the other two are acclaimed visual artists with no movement training whatsoever. The complex, refined movements that one man can do with ease another can only approximate.
All are given the same instructions. It’s how they execute them that displays an individual portrait of each man’s character, as well as an unavoidable comparison between the participants. It’s the evolution of information, built up through units of action, that shows what they have in common and where their physical histories set them apart.
Performances will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-8, in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $38-$42 general, $19-$21 for students, available at www.mondaviarts.org or 530-754-2787. A question-and-answer session will follow each performance.
