The International Film Series starts its 15th year with “The Cats of Mirikitani” on Friday. A 2006 U.S. film, it was directed by Linda Hattendorf.
Films are shown on the first and third Friday nights of each month, from September through June, at International House, 10 College Park. Refreshments are served at 7:30 p.m., and the film begins promptly at 8 p.m. There is no charge, but donations are accepted with gratitude.
In “The Cats of Mirikitani,” Jimmy Tsutomo Mirikitani, born in Sacramento in 1920 and raised in Hiroshima until he was 18, tells the traumas and occasional joys of his life through art. The film documents his wide-ranging and sometimes harrowing experiences, among them life in Japan, World War II concentration camps in California, loss of family and U.S. citizenship, homelessness in New York and living in the shadow of the Twin Towers on 9/11, but also his beloved cats and being reunited with his sister.
The message of the healing power of art won the Audience Award at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival as well as other awards.
The film series is sponsored by the United Nations Association and I-House.
