The Davis High School Symphony Orchestra, the Holmes Junior High Advanced Orchestra, and cellist Eunghee Cho, a senior at Davis High School, were recognized this month with awards from Downbeat Magazine. The awards were announced in the magazine’s June issue, currently on newstands.

Cho was selected as a winner in the High School Classical Soloist Division. Last year, he won the Classical Jammies, a regional showcase with a concert held at the Mondavi Center, which led to an appearance as soloist with the Sacramento Philharmonic earlier this season. Cho also won this year’s Davis High School Concerto Competition.

The Davis High School Symphony Orchestra was picked by Downbeat as winner in the High School Classical Ensemble Division.

The Holmes Junior High Advanced Orchestra was chosen as a winner in the Junior High Classical Ensemble Division. It also earned Best Junior High Orchestra and Best Overall Orchestra honors in the Parks Festival, held on May 5 at the Great America theme park in Santa Clara.

Both the DHS and Holmes orchestras are conducted by Angelo Moreno.
