Opera gets hi-def screening

By From page A9 | May 11, 2012

The Mondavi Center’s series of high-definition opera screenings continues with the San Francisco Opera’s 2008 production of Gaetano Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor,” at 7 p.m. Monday in the Vanderhoef Studio Theater at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The emotionally fragile Lucia is driven to madness when manipulated to marry a man she does not love. Featuring the most famous mad scene in the repertory and filled with ravishing melodies, this bel canto masterpiece evokes the passion and desperation of a woman used by her brother as a political pawn. Coloratura soprano Natalie Dessay stars in the title role. The opera is sung in Italian with English subtitles, and the 124-minute program includes a behind-the-scenes interview. Tickets are $20 general, $10 for students, available at www.mondaviarts.org or (530) 754-2787.
