Davis Odd Fellows’ Thursday Live! concert series presents two jazz bands on Thursday — Zorelli and The Jazz Patrol featuring Calvin Handy.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall, 415 Second St. in downtown Davis. Admission is free and beer, wine and sodas will be for sale. All ages are welcome.

Zorelli is a multi-instrumental band based in Davis and Sacramento that plays a range of tropically infused music, including everything from reggae, salsa and calypso to soul, funk and jazz.

Listeners can hear the influence of musicians such as Bob Marley, Sublime, The Police, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Steel Pulse, Gilberto Jobim, Django Reinhardt, Michael Brecker, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Andy Narell and Soulive.

“Their music is contagious,” a news release said.

Zorelli recently released a self-titled CD featuring Wendell Fishman on keyboards, Rick Montgomery on steel drum and kalimba, Keith Cline on saxophones and electronic wind instrument, Darren Virassammy on bass, Andrew Enberg on drums, Ron Cowden on guitar and Warren Jones on percussion.

The CD includes original compositions by Fishman, Virassammy and Cline. Music samples from the new CD and upcoming show listings can be found on Zorelli’s Facebook page “Zorelli Music,” and also its website, www.Zorellimusic.com.

The musical style of The Jazz Patrol is focused on jazz standards, Latin and funk grooves. Offering a laid-back expression in their music, the quintet creates its own arrangements of be-bop, straight-ahead jazz, ballads, mellow bossa and R&B tunes composed by the jazz masters and purveyors of funk.

Calvin Handy leads the band on tenor saxophone, and regular performers with The Jazz Patrol include Dean McGee, trumpet; Robert Blake, guitar; Travis Bradley, bass; and Jeff Minnieweather, drums.

“Folks who hear us perform always highlight our smooth and moving approach to jazz ballads,” Handy says. “We try to keep it simple.”

Regional jazz stalwarts who have performed with The Jazz Patrol include pianist/composer Joe Gilman, guitarist Bill Scholer, alto saxophonist Garrett Perkins, pianist Terry Tippee, drummer Jimmy Robinson, bass player Erik Larson and bassist Bob Bell.

Thursday Live! concerts take place on the first Thursdays of each month. To be notified of upcoming shows, email Juelie Roggli at [email protected] or call (530) 219-5444.

Davis Odd Fellows is part of an international organization whose focus is community support and charitable giving. This series of concerts is supported by the Odd Fellows Music Concert Committee and KDRT.

The July 5 Thursday Live! show will feature Bill Scholer and Waiting for Bruce.
