Calling all aspiring singers!
For the ninth year, the Yolo County Fair will host the Yolo Idol contest. Open to singers living in Yolo County, the competition will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, on the West Stage next to the Rotary Park picnic area at the fairgrounds in Woodland.
The event attracts more than 1,000 fans annually.
“Yolo County is home to many talented performers and we are proud to give them the opportunity to show their special talents and entertain a large crowd of fairgoers,” said Yolo County Fair CEO Rita Moore. “Yolo Idol has become one of the most anticipated shows at the fair.”
Yolo Idol is a karaoke contest and is for individual singers only. Each participant must provide instrumental accompaniment on CD without voices and must be prepared to sing two songs. One song is for the competition, and the winner will perform an encore.
First-, second- and third-place finishers will be selected by the judges, with the winner receiving a $250 prize and the second- and third-place contestants taking home $100 and $50, respectively. Judging will be based on vocal quality, performance quality, stage presence, appropriateness of the song selection and appearance.
While there is no entry fee, there are a few rules. Each singer must pre-register at the fair office, 1125 East St. in Woodland. Entry and release for minors forms may be downloaded at www.YoloIdol.com, or may be requested by emailing [email protected] or at the fair office.
Due to time limitations, registrations will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 20 contestants to sign up will be able to participate. If more than 20 entries are received, they will be placed on a waiting list in the order the applications are received.
The Yolo Idol competition was inspired by Fox television’s popular “American Idol,” but it is not affiliated with the national contest.
Admission to Yolo Idol is free, as is admission to the Yolo County Fair, the largest free-admission fair in California. The fair opens at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, and closes Sunday, Aug. 19. The fairgrounds are at Gum Avenue and East Street in Woodland.
