Piano/percussion quartet visits with intriguing instrumental works

By From page A11 | October 23, 2013

The quartet known as Ensemble Yarn/Wire consists of two pianists and two percussionists — with kits that include, depending on the occasion, anything from gongs to metal pipes to marimbas — with the hammers inside the piano and the mallets used on the percussion instruments combining to create new and unusual sounds.

Based in New York, the group has been performing together since 2005, and their repertoire ranges from early 20th century figures like Béla Bartók to late 20th century minimalists like Steve Reich to “wet ink” works by rising young composers.

Ensemble Yarn/Wire will give a free lunchtime concert at 12:05 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the Mondavi Center’s Vanderhoef Studio Theatre, sponsored by the UC Davis department of music.
