The Sacramento Ballet will premiere a new piece by longtime artistic director Ron Cunningham in February. “The Great Gatsby” is based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, with costumes, music and dances like the Charleston recalling the extravagance of the Roaring 20s.
Paired with Cunningham’s new ballet will be the George Balanchine classic from 1970 “Who Cares?” which is set in the same era, and features music by George Gershwin.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-9, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Sacramento Community Center Theatre, 1301 L St. in Sacramento. Tickets are $17-$70, available at www.sacballet.com or www.tickets.com, or 916-808-5181.
The Sacramento Ballet also will bring a different program — “Modern Masters” — to the Mondavi Center on May 16-18.
