The geology, rivers, fields and people of Northern California provide the inspiration for the paintings of artist Alejandro Rubio on exhibit through September in the solo show “Flatscapes” at Gallery 625 in Woodland.
A native of Montevideo, Uruguay, Rubio has lived in Davis since 2001 and has exhibited at solo art shows in San Francisco, Sacramento, Davis and Woodland; and in group exhibitions throughout Northern California, in addition to solo and group shows in his hometown of Montevideo.
From an early age, he became acquainted with the work of Uruguayan native artist Joaquin Torres Garcia, and took classes for six years at the Escuela del Sur (School of the South), where Rubio’s father was a member. From this exploration, Rubio gained an understanding of 20th century art and the important role of the artist during this time, as well as discovering his own voice as an artist.
“I imagine a connection between the fractured land and the lives of the people who inhabit it, and from this I draw my inspiration,” Rubio said in a statement. He goes on to say: “… the impact of the landscape and the light can easily be seen in my paintings. I let those influences filter through my practice in the studio.”
Rubio will attend the exhibit’s opening reception on Friday, Sept. 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., coinciding with downtown Woodland’s First Friday Art Walk. Guitarist Josh Wisterman, 14, will be featured from 6 to 8 p.m. The reception will be hosted by YoloArts board member Susan Lord Bovey and wine from Turkovich Family Wines, sponsored by Roth Ranch, will be served.
“Flatscapes” runs through Oct. 3 at Gallery 625, 625 Court St., Woodland. Regular gallery viewing hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For additional information, call YoloArts at (530) 406-4844, or visit the website at yoloarts.org.
