The Notorious Shank Brothers will bring their classic bluegrass music to Picnic in the Park at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Band members — Al Shank, mandolin and vocals; Ken Eldridge, guitar and vocals; Erik Shank, five-string banjo and vocals; and Kim-Xuan Nguyen, bass and vocals — have been together since 2006 and have been a fixture in the bluegrass scene of Yolo and Sacramento counties ever since.
The band plays at the Yolo County Fair each year, at farmers markets in Winters and Woodland, at local wineries and breweries, and at the Woodland Opera House. Its material includes classic bluegrass songs and instrumental numbers, with a few new tunes that still have that high, lonesome sound.
The Davis Farmers Market is open from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Spring produce — cherries, blueberries, apricots, nectarines, snap peas, asparagus, greens, lettuces, avocados, kiwis and strawberries — plus local eggs, honey, wine, beef and lamb fill the market, with crafts at the north end.
Food vendors have lots of choices for dinner, or bring your own picnic. Davis Soroptimists will pour beer and wine to raise money for local charities.
Children’s entertainment includes Central Park’s bicycle-powered carousel, Rocknasium’s climbing structure, bounce houses, face-painting and balloon-maker Dilly Dally the Clown.
