With a cast of more than 30 performers ranging in age from elementary school students to senior citizens, “Fruitcakes” is genuine community theater. The family comedy will be presented by the Winters Theatre Company as its holiday production.
The play will open its eight-performance run at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, with a gala evening presentation. Additional performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, and the following two Fridays and Saturdays. Matinees, at 2 p.m. are planned Sundays, Nov. 27, and Dec. 4. No Sunday matinee is planned Nov. 20 because of the community Thanksgiving celebration.
“Fruitcakes” takes place in small town famous for the holiday fruitcakes produced by two feuding sisters who share the secret recipe, but nothing else. In addition to the baking spinsters, the town must deal with a chickenpox epidemic, an estranged old man, a runaway child, plans for a Christmas nativity play and the usual holiday tensions that accompany a community celebration.
Although the play contains many comic situations, “Fruitcakes” also considers the human problems of alienation, growing maturity and eventual reconciliation as the play’s characters come to an understanding of the true Christmas spirit.
Tickets are $15 for the gala opening on Nov. 18. All subsequent shows are $10 general and $6 for senior citizens and students. For reservations or additional information, email [email protected] or call (530) 795-4014.
