The Davis Youth Flute Choir, under the direction of Maquette Kuper, will present its 30th annual Summer Flute Camp Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, in the Atrium of the Davis Art Center, 1919 F St.

The choir performs both classical and jazz music, the latter under the direction of Fredrick Lange. The concert will feature several of Lange’s new arrangements for the group.

The retired director of the Davis High School bands has arranged a “Concerto Grosso” by Vivaldi and Elgar’s “Nimrod from the Enigma Variations” as well as some jazz tunes that originated from New Orleans, “The Royal Garden Blues,” “After You’ve Gone” and “Tin Roof Blues.”

Flutists participating are Megan Campbell, Lemuel Chang, Elise Chu, Will Forest, Anita Hashimoto, Sehyun Hwang, Mia Jones-Zamora, Edward Jun, Anysia Lee, Karoline Magolske, Jun Han Park, Linda Su, Krista Titensor and Sabrina Williams. Joining the choir are Emma Maul on bass and Jacob Cross on drums.

The summer flute camp offers an opportunity for the flutists to work for several hours each day for a week and a half and to study both classical and jazz music. Choir members perform on piccolo, flute, alto flute and bass flute and are accompanied by string bass and drums for the jazz portion.

Many are members of the year-round choir, which will perform in August at the National Flute Association Convention in New Orleans. The Davis Youth Flute Choir performed last summer as representatives of the United States at the World’s Fair EXPO 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea, and also performed in Sangju, a sister city of Davis.

The choir also organizes annual benefit concert performances that have raised funds for the music programs of Davis High as well as the three junior high schools: Emerson, Harper and Holmes. Each December, the choir performs holiday music at the Sacramento International Airport as well as giving community service concerts in various Davis and Woodland venues.

The choir also is available to hire to perform at events and weddings.
