Often a consumer has questions about a specific problem with an appliance. Before you call for service… here are some common questions and answers for troubleshooting your problems with appliances.

REFRIGERATOR

PROBLEM: Ice cubes have odor/taste or refrigerator has odor
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Food transmitting odor/taste to ice cubes – Foods
with strong odors should be tightly wrapped.
• Interior of refrigerator needs cleaning – Clean
thoroughly per care instructions for your appliance.
Keep an open box of baking soda in the
refrigerator; replace every three months.

PROBLEM: Hot air from bottom of refrigerator
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Normal airflow cooling motor. In the refrigeration
process, it is normal that heat be expelled in the
area under the refrigerator. Some floor coverings
will discolor at these normal and safe temperatures.

PROBLEM: Food freezing in the refrigerator
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Food to close to air vent at the back of the
refrigerator – Move the food away from the air vent.

WASHER

PROBLEM: Not draining/Not spinning/Not agitating
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Load is out of balance – Redistribute clothes and
run drain & spin or rinse & spin. Increase load size
if washing small load containing heavy and light
items.
• Drain hose siphoning; drain hose pushed too far
down the drain – Ensure there is an air gap
between hose and drain.

PROBLEM: Clothes too wet
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Load is out of balance – Redistribute clothes and
run drain & spin or rinse & spin. Increase load size
if washing small load containing heavy and light
items.
• Overloading – The dry weight of a load should be
less than 16 lb.
• Household drain may be clogged – Check household
plumbing. You may need to call a plumber.

DRYER

PROBLEM: Dryer Shakes or makes noise
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Some shaking and/or noise is normal. Dryer may be
sitting unevenly – Move dryer to an even floor space,
or adjust leveling legs as necessary until even.

PROBLEM: Clothes take too long to dry
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Improper or obstructed ducting – Check to be sure
dryer venting is correct. Make sure ducting is clean,
free of kinks and unobstructed. Check to see if
outside wall damper operates easily.
• Large loads of heavy fabrics (like beach towels) –
Large, heavy fabrics contain more moisture and
take longer to dry. Separate large, heavy fabrics
into smaller loads to speed drying time.
• Under loading – If you are drying only one or two
items, add a few items to ensure proper tumbling.

PROBLEM: The DRY dryness level was chosen but load is still damp
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Exhaust system is blocked – Inspect and clean
exhaust system.
• Load consists of a mixture of heavy and light fabrics –
When combining heavy and light fabrics in a load,
you may need to dry a little longer.

DISHWASHER

PROBLEM: Dishes and flatware not clean
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Low inlet water temperature – Make sure inlet
water temperature is correct. Turn on the hot
water faucet nearest the dishwasher and turn off
the faucet. This ensures the entering water is hot.
Select Hot Start if available.
• Water pressure is temporarily low – Turn on a
faucet. Is water coming out more slowly than
usual? If so, wait until pressure is normal before
using your dishwasher.
• Air gap or disposer is clogged – Clean the air gap or
flush the disposer.
• Improper rack loading – Make sure large dishware
does not block the detergent dispenser or the wash
arms.

PROBLEM: Spots and filming on glasses and flatware
POSSIBLE CAUSES/WHAT TO DO:
• Extremely hard water – Use rinse agents to remove
spots and prevent new film buildup.
• Low inlet water temperature – Make sure water
temperature is at least 120o F.
• Old or damp powder detergent – Make sure
detergent is fresh.
• Overloading or improper loading of dishwasher –
Load dishwasher as indicated by owner manual.
