In the Clubhouse: So, what are the best golf movies?

Recently, I spent some time talking with a pal about golf bets. If you play golf, I’m sure you’ve been in on some of the most thoughtful ways ever devised to lose money. I once lost lunch because I didn’t know how many clubs I carried in my bag. I hadn’t even opened my trunk and […]

Aggies mired in one of worst football beginnings

After coughing up 11 touchdowns while allowing 737 yards in a 77-37 dismantling at the hands of Montana State on Saturday, UC Davis appears headed for one of its worst football seasons in history. Stumbling along at 1-5 and digging itself deeper into the Big Sky Conference cellar (0-3), the Aggies set a handful of school […]

Despite offensive improvement, Aggies hammered, 77-37

There must be something about the scarce water in Northern California that brings out the bear in these Bobcats. For the second straight week, No. 11/14 Montana State used a valley venue to set a new school standard for total offense. In pounding UC Davis, 77-37, in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday at […]

Scott takes over and the offense sings a different tune

Ben Scott has been biding his time in the UC Davis football program. First, he redshirted as a 2012 freshman. Then, he sat behind three other quarterbacks last season. He got his first collegiate gridiron taste earlier this season when Division II Fort Lewis came calling, but his 4-of-5 passing performance for 60 yards (including a 20-yard […]

Aggies to simplify, pondering switch at QB

The trick now is to make sure disappointment doesn’t become discouragement. UC Davis is struggling through an 0-2 start in the Big Sky Conference (1-4 overall) and a loss Saturday during the Homecoming celebration against Montana State (4-2, 2-0) would give the Aggies their worst start to a football season since an 0-6 beginning in 1960. […]

Finally healthy, Aggie men hit the hardcourt

They’re baaaaccccckkkk! With the opening of UC Davis basketball practice this week, the Aggies welcomed the return of J.T. Adenrele, Tyler Les and Josh Ritchart. You remember these guys, right? Rewind to the 2012-13 UCD season. UCD, in coach Jim Les’ second year, had improved by nine games from the year before to 14-17. The […]

Aggies get yet another high-flying Big Sky challenge

Get used to this name: Dakota Prukop. On Saturday, the Texas native will become the latest sizzling-hot quarterback to test the mettle of UC Davis defenders when No. 11/14 Montana State comes to town for a 4 p.m. Homecoming showdown at Aggie Stadium. Prukop, the reigning Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week, is coming […]

Aggies need to find themselves as Montanas approach

It’s beginning to feel like Arena Football for many of the Big Sky Conference members. On Saturday, 14th-ranked Montana State held off Sacramento State, 59-56. In a 56-53 squeaker, No. 2 Eastern Washington almost lost to Idaho State. Yes, that Idaho State … the team that has been foundering near the bottom of the standings since […]

Jones’ break-out game showcases depth of UCD DBs

UC Davis defensive back Zach Jones has been coming on, and Saturday was arguably the sophomore from Napa’s best outing as a collegiate. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound projectile had nine tackles, an interception and a couple of defended passes. Jones, who played in all 12 games as a freshman in 2013, now has 20 tackles this fall […]

Still looking for a complete game, Aggies lose in Portland

PORTLAND — The UC Davis defense was playing a solid second half. The Aggies trailed 20-14 with less than seven minutes remaining, and were faced with a fourth-and-1 at their own 43. UCD elected to punt and Portland State went on a 14-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a 19-yard Jonathan Gonzalez field goal to put […]

Aggies need to cultivate winning attitude, which Gould promises is coming

“When you’ve been in a culture that hasn’t had a lot of (recent) success, the easiest thing for guys to do is revert back to saying ‘It’s the same old, same old,’ ” says second-year UC Davis football coach Ron Gould. “In actuality, we’re much better than a year ago and the only thing that’s […]

Let’s look in on 5 former Blue Devil standouts

It’s not many high schools that can brag about athletes continuing their sports careers at big-name universities. Of course, we’re Davis High. It’s almost become commonplace that a handful of Blue Devils head to far corners of the nation to compete for Duke, Princeton, UCLA, Arizona, Texas … Well, you get the idea. Every so […]

Vintage Blue Devils reminisce at reunion

It was the mid-1950s. Davis had fewer than 5,000 residents.

Folks were hunting pheasant in fields just northeast of Pole Line Road and Eighth Street.

Kozy Korner, across the street from the old high school, was a happening place.

Downtown had a gas station, a butcher shop, the ever-present Davis Lumber and a couple of automobile dealerships. Quessenberry’s Drug Store was a busy retailer.

Despite 168 points allowed, PSU defense may not be lousy

Before UC Davis football fans get too excited about the prospect of the Aggie offense against the Portland State defense a few details must be noted. First, the Vikings have faced a rainbow of offensive styles, including those of two Pac-12 opponents. Sure, PSU has coughed up 168 points in going 1-3, but these Vikings had to weather a […]
