Superman coaster takes riders to new heights

Superman is an iconic hero; his image and emblem are easily identifiable. Despite using his namesake, the newest roller coaster experience at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is far from the familiar.

Superman: Ultimate Flight, which opened last month, is challenging what is possible in roller coasters with unique construction. The design stands out due to its towering vertical spin, now the tallest inversion west of the Mississippi River.

The red, blue and yellow track twists riders through two disorienting vertical rolls and two upside-down loops. Lap restraints allow passengers to experience some weightlessness through the intense flips.

Nature’s Theater teaches kids to safeguard Earth

Few would think a trip to the park would be enough to make Feya Dawkins conscious of pollution. However, Nature’s Theater creators are using Davis’ Central Park as a fun venue for some serious lessons on conservation.

“They teach us not to pollute the Earth,” the 10-year-old said of the husband-wife duo of Jeff Falyn and Lyndsay Dawkins. “When I catch people littering, like throwing gum wrappers on the ground, I will tell them not to.”

Nature’s Theater brings youngsters together for 30- to 40-minute interactive theater shows outdoors. Most of the stories place the kids in the role of heroes who are attempting to stop misguided and otherwise environmentally unfriendly characters.

Falyn and Dawkins began their storytelling five years ago, and have since hosted their program at a variety of locations in Yolo County …
