Comings & Goings: Another closure for doomed Discoveries site

By From page A9 | October 20, 2013

Could the former Discoveries space at 213 E St. be cursed? It’s been a revolving door of businesses. Since 2011, it’s been a mattress store, used furniture store, Luigi’s pizza and International Bistro. And on Oct. 11, Huong Lan Sandwiches closed.

The Vietnamese (Bánh Mì) sandwich shop opened early this year. It still has a shop in Sacramento at 65th and Broadway.

A sign on the door reads, “Sorry Davis, Huong Lan is breaking up with you. Today (Oct. 11) will be our last day together. It’s not you, it’s us. We will always have Huong Lan in Sacramento though. </3 (broken heart emoticon).”

Sweet and Shavery, the Italian shave ice store coming to 210 E St., is under construction, and co-owner Brian Nuss says it should be complete around Halloween. He hopes to have it open soon after that.

The store will specialize in a sorbet-like treat that mixes shave ice and frozen vanilla custard. Frozen custard is a richer, creamier soft serve that’s popular on the East Coast. The store also will serve warm crepes.

Davis Stages opened in August at 915 Third St., behind Candy House. It’s a dance studio for ages 3 to adult.

The owner is Miguel Garcia. Teachers include Denise Fladager and Tracey Freeman. Classes include different ballet options, tap, jazz and Broadway/musical. For more information, visit http://www.davisstages.com or call 530-564-4759.

T.J.Maxx’s new Davis store opens Sunday at 4621 Second St., next to Target.

Sunday’s hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The first 1,000 customers will receive reusable bags. Regular hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.

Pet Food Express opens on Tuesday in Oakshade Town Center, 2171 Cowell Blvd. It joins Common Grounds Coffee and Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop for a grand opening (and reopening) event next weekend.

The grand opening “fair” features live music, free pet washes and other specials.
