A Mexican food restaurant called El Toro Bravo will replace the closed Baja Fresh at 237 D St. It’s under the same ownership as nearby Burgers & Brew and Crepeville.
A license to sell alcohol is posted in the window, with an application date of Feb. 13.

A Panera Bread is planned for the corner of Third and F streets, filling part of the former Blockbuster building. A spokesman said in late February that it planned a June opening date, but there hasn’t been much work on the site yet, so that may be revised.

Smooth as Silk, the day spa at 305 D St., is closing its doors at the end of the month. Owner Stella Forbes posted a thank-you note on her business’ Facebook page, notifying customers of the closure “after 26 years of serving this wonderful community of Davis.”
Its last day will be Saturday.

Jason Dayne of Jeeba Jewelry Studio opened in November at 712 Third St., next to Bistro 33. His designs feature hand-crafted semi-precious stones like pearls and garnets.
Local beader Robina D. Slizeski of Pavone Designs started selling her jewelry there in December while Dayne was on vacation. He returned this month and continues to sell Slizeski’s jewelry at his shop.

The Lily’s Boutique at 218 E St., in the E Street Plaza, is staying put. The owner was considering closing or moving, but chose to remodel the women’s clothing store instead.

On Feb. 14, Weight Watchers moved its meetings from Redwood Park to the Odd Fellows Hall, 415 Second St. Meetings are at 9:30 a.m., and 12:15 and 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays; and 8 and 9:30 a.m. Saturdays. The Tuesday lunchtime meeting is new. Weigh-ins start 30 minutes before meeting times.

Luigi’s, at 213 E St., opened Jan. 22. Open for lunch and dinner, it features pizza by the pie or by the slice, meatball sandwiches, pasta, lasagna and salads.
All of the food, sauces and dressings are made from scratch from family recipes, owners Linda and Greg Brida said.
Downstairs, there is additional seating, a stage and sound equipment for its all-ages music space and game room called the Fungarden. Its first live music debuted Saturday, Jan. 29.

A new Davis Flea Market debuted Sunday, Jan. 29, on the E Street Plaza in downtown Davis. Craft, clothing and knickknack vendors sell their wares while musicians perform. The event continues on the last Sunday of every month. The next one is April 29.

Davis’ beloved toy store Alphabet Moon closed for good in late January. Alzada Knickerbocker, owner of The Avid Reader bookstore, plans to take over the space to add variety to her store’s selection.

Sweet Briar Books closed on Christmas Eve. The used bookstore was near the Davis Food Co-op at 654 G St. The end of that shopping center is looking pretty bare.

Hallmark Inn, 110 F St., is undergoing a remodel that includes plans to add retail space to its ground floor. The hotel could accommodate up to three separate businesses.

City Hall Tavern opened in late 2011 on the F Street side of Bistro 33. The bar uses the Historic City Hall entrance at 226 F St. The menu is different from Bistro’s, but the food is prepared in the same kitchen.
The fun new venue features bicycle wheels on the ceiling, large screen TVs, a ping-pong table and “33 bottles of beer on the wall.”

Fish’s Wild, ”Fish Grill & More” opened in late 2011 at 516 Second St., next to Uncle Vito’s. It fills the spaces left by Mishka’s Café and Cartridge World, which both moved.
The menu offers more than seafood: grilled beef short ribs, grilled chicken and chicken katsu. Fish choices include salmon, tilapia, trout, shrimp, mahi mahi and others. Most of the choices are grilled, but fans of fried food aren’t left out. There are traditional plates, salads, tacos and wraps. Side orders are brown or white rice, grilled zucchini, steamed veggies and French fries.

Across the breezeway is another new attention-grabbing store. Aella Boutique is at 227 E St., Suite 3. It sells women’s stiletto heeled shoes, stockings, panties “and more.” The back of the store, behind a black lace curtain, features adult accessories.

Whole Foods plans to open a store in the former Borders Books & Music space in Davis Commons. Signs say “Coming in Fall 2012.”
The store will feature a large prepared foods area and lots of “grab-and-go” items. The store will have produce, meat, seafood, bakery, cheese, beer, wine and grocery sections.

And last but most certainly not least, the most popular restaurant and bar in town is the new de Vere’s Irish Pub, which opened in November at 217 E St. Pub hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends.
